Mold and mildew grows in a rapid fashion, usually within 24 hours after a flood, and can move its way throughout a home, from the attic to the basement and crawl spaces. The best defense to flood mold is to clean, dry or, usually as a last resort, dispose of belongings affected by mold. While it may be difficult to throw away your favorite piece of furniture, a sentimental item like a child’s doll or any other valuable item, it may be necessary since a thorough cleanup must be done to remove all the hazardous mold. Step 1: The first step is to assess the water damage and control the moisture problem. The source of the water must be identified and fixed so that the area is dry.
