A common question I get in the eye clinic and across here on YouTube is
“Can I shower with contact lenses on?”

Showering with contact lenses in your eyes does put you at risk for eye infections.
Contact lenses and water DO NOT MIX!
Getting any water (tap water, lake water, bottled water etc) carries the chance for very nasty corneal infections which can even lead to vision loss.

The two most common eye infections related to showering in contact lenses include pseudomonas and acanthamoeba keratitis. These infections are known to penetrate into the eye at alarming rates and often result in vision loss (and may even require corneal transplants).

It is best to always take your contact lenses out before showering or swimming (same goes for hot tubbing).

In some situations, doctors will have people tightly close their eyes while bathing but this still carries a risk. If you are a swimmer, consider prescription swimming goggles!

Always consult your local eye care provider about what they recommend for you!

IMPORTANT: If you ever have a red eye, a painful eye or experiencing vision loss related to your contacts...REMOVE THE LENSES and call your local eye doctor ASAP.
