A border town with Switzerland, the city is especially renowned worldwide for absinthe, of which it was a major place of production at the beginning of the 19th century before its prohibition in 1915. The city has several flowery parks, including the Grand Cours and the square Clemenceau but also numerous monuments, such as the Saint-Pierre gate which is in the form of a triumphal arch surmounted by a “High” bell tower, the Chapel of Hope, the Saint-Bénigne church, which bears witness to of the importance of Pontarlier during the Middle Ages.
