→ The more common causes of yeast infections and suggested lifestyle changes essentially operate around two ideas: one—yeast is a fungus, and two—a balanced vaginal flora is important
→ Common causes include: antibiotics, as antibiotics can interfere with the balance of the vaginal flora, and the use of certain spermicide/condoms, as certain spermicides and condoms include the ingredient N-9, a nonionic detergent that not only immobilizes sperm, but also inhibits lactobacilli, unbalancing the vaginal flora and promoting yeast infections.
→ Common lifestyle changes include: avoiding activities that promote fungal growth, and avoiding activities that disrupt the vaginal flora.
→ Replacing synthetic underwear with cotton underwear because they are more breathable, avoiding hot tubs/long hot baths, avoiding tight fitting clothing like pantyhose and leggings, as well as changing out of wet or damp clothes quickly—all of these recommendations exist because yeast is a fungus and fungi thrive in moisture-rich environments.
→ Stop douching, stop using scented products (think feminine products, like pads and tampons, as well as vaginal sprays), and stop scrubbing the vagina with soap (the vagina is a self cleaning oven!)—these recommendations exist because the vaginal environment is rich in different microscopic organisms and douching/using scented products/scrubbing with soap can disrupt the vaginal flora which can cause yeast infections.
