With the disappearance of the glorious Mercedes-AMG E63 wagon from our shores a couple years ago, the title of Craziest Kid Hauler in the Mercedes-Benz showroom now falls to this: the Mercedes-AMG GLS63 SUV. It’s a three-row full-size SUV with a hand-built twin-turbo V-8 under its hood, an aggressive sport suspension, all-wheel drive, grippy seats and electronics that tie it all together to make it work. And man, work it does — it’s a huge SUV, but it’s massively entertaining to drive, providing unbelievable thrust with a stab of the go-pedal, accompanied by noises you don’t expect to come from a big family truckster. Fuel economy? Not the point. Smiles per gallon, buddy, that’s what we’re doing here.

It doesn’t hurt that the GLS is also roomy, comfortable, multifunctional, and now comes equipped with the latest Mercedes-Benz technology for both chassis and powertrain controls, and for multimedia, as well. Materials look and feel expensive, with just one glaring problem with the cabin — that infernal steering wheel. The rest of it is glorious, even if it does ride a little stiffly.
