Episode 29: FINDING HEART ROCK // Joshua Tree NP

What a cool place - one of our favorite stops in Joshua Tree National Park!! However, finding the rock was a little tricky.

So how do you actually get to Heart Rock?

We found a blog post helpful (we'll leave the link in the notes below), it actually lists the GPS coordinates – however we didn’t have the right app downloaded to double check it once we got in the park. Like they warn, your service goes out way before you get to Heart Rock so be prepared for that.

We would suggest reading the blog post – screen-shot it, download the trail to Arch Rock and take our few added suggestions. You can actually see the heart from the Arch Rock Trail. This would have been incredibly helpful to know ahead of time. We just didn’t know where to look.

You park at the lot for the Arch Rock Trail, the trail will take you to cross the road. Then there is signage that is pretty well marked that takes you on the trail to the right towards Arch Rock. You follow the markers until you get to a metal sign that indicates the loop portion of Arch-Rock Trail. GO Left. There are stones that mark the path on the left-hand side, this is where we screwed up originally and went too far. You walk to the 10th stone marker, then you leave the trail to an unmarked trail. It is at this point you can look straight ahead and see the Heart Rock.

The unmarked trail will take you to a dried-up riverbed, called a wash. Once you hit the riverbed follow it to the left. We saw a bunch of Cairns along the bed indicating the trail. Look straight ahead and you should see Heart Rock.

As the blog-post mentions if you get to too many large rocks and you’re scrambling – you’ve gone too far and won’t be able to see it. Even if you do this, go back to the riverbed and follow it more to the left to take you away from the boulder field.
