Brunei's massive palace is called Istana Nurul Iman and it's over 2.1 million square feet. Located in the Bruneian capital city of Bandar Seri Begawan, it's only open to the public for three days every year. This open house is to celebrate the end of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month of fasting, with the celebration called Eid Mubarak. In Brunei, it’s known as Hari Raya Aidilfitri and, when we visited, it took place in early June. People wish each other Happy Raya or Selamat Hari Raya. A massive buffet lunch is served free of charge and people can meet the royal family. We were so lucky to be in Brunei during the one time of year this celebration happens because it gave us the chance to meet many people from Brunei and observe this important cultural event.
