SHAKEEL BADAYUNI

Shakeel Badayuni, born on August 3, 1916, in the enchanting city of Badaun, Uttar Pradesh, left an indelible mark on the world of Urdu poetry and Hindi/Urdu cinema as a renowned poet, lyricist, and songwriter. His poetic journey began with a strong foundation in Arabic, Urdu, Persian, and Hindi, thanks to his father's foresight and support. Unlike many poets of his time, poetry was not a hereditary passion for Shakeel, but a calling that he embraced during his years at Aligarh Muslim University, where he excelled in inter-college and inter-university mushairas. His poetry, marked by its romantic and heartfelt essence, set him apart in an era focused on societal issues. Shakeel's illustrious career took flight when he migrated to Bombay in 1944, collaborating with iconic music composer Naushad Ali on the hit film "Dard" (1947). This partnership would flourish, giving birth to timeless classics in films such as "Baiju Bawra" (1952), "Mother India" (1957), and "Mughal-e-Azam" (1960). Beyond Naushad, Shakeel lent his lyrical genius to other music directors like Hemant Kumar and Ravi, leaving an indelible legacy in Indian cinema. Despite his early departure at the age of fifty-three in 1970, Shakeel Badayuni's poetic prowess continues to resonate through his timeless verses, evoking the magic of love and longing in the hearts of generations to come.

POETRY TEXT:

Complete Ghazal in Roman Text (Credits: Rekhta):

ab to ḳhushī kā ġham hai na ġham kī ḳhushī mujhe
be-his banā chukī hai bahut zindagī mujhe

rakhnā hai tishna-kām to saaqī bas ik nazar
sairāb kar na de mirī tishna-labī mujhe

paayā hai sab ne dil magar is dil ke bāvajūd
ik shai milī hai dil meñ khaTaktī huī mujhe

raazī hoñ yā ḳhafā hoñ vo jo kuchh bhī hoñ 'shakīl'
har haal meñ qubūl hai un kī ḳhushī mujhe
