In this clip Hadrat Mufakkir al-Islam Shaykh Sayyid 'Abd al-Qadir al-Jilani [Hafidahullah] explains that even though the Companions [Sahaba] did make mistakes and do sins [as they are not infallible like Prophets & Messengers], they are still Companions. Also that we should respect and talk good of all the Companions as in the Quran Chapter : 8, Verse : 74, Allah calls all the Companions Truthful. A great refutation of those who say the Companions were not Muslims because they made mistakes.

Translation of entire speech :

We [Ahl as-Sunnah wal-Jamaah] do not believe the Companions to be infallible. Rather, we believe that the Prophets & Messengers are infallible. A Companion may commit a mistake or sin & still remain a Companion. For example, he who committed adultery from the Companions was stoned and punished; at this point we ask, is a Wali [one who is close to God] superior or that Companion who has perpetrated the act of sin? This is the value of the companionship of the Holy Prophet [PBUHAHF] that despite the Companion's sin being known & subsequently being punished. Looking at Him [PBUHAHF] with Faith [Iman] is so great that the Companion is superior to Auliya [& the rest of the Ummah after the Companions]. It is preferable that we glorify the Companions in the greatest of ways. The only thing that can negate companionship is Kufr [disbelief]. Therefore, if a Companion does not do anything which makes him a Kafir then he/she will not be considered to be amongst the people of falsehood. We do not believe that the Companions are infallible like Prophets & Messengers hence a Companion may commit a sin & still remain a Companion. This is why the Glorious Quran refers to them as "Haq [Truthful]" [al-Quran, 8:74] meaning that they [the Companions] are upon Truth [Haq] due to their Faith [Iman]. Therefore, as long as a Companion's companionship is established one cannot call him a disbeliever. As long as you cannot call a Companion a disbeliever, he is a Companion. "Haq [Truth]" is joined with companionship until he stays a Companion. When a Companion falls from the criteria of companionship then he/she will not be considered upon "Haq". When will he fall from the criteria of companionship? When he becomes Kafir. A Companion may commit countless sins [& remain a Believer], like me & you, we are very sinful yet can we be called disbelievers due to our sins? Definitely not. If the likes of me & you cannot be expelled from Islam due to our sins then how can one expel a Companion from Islam due to the same reason? This is a misconception that some people have nowadays.

The Sunni school of thought is purer in comparison to all other clamaints to Islam, because it is reasonable [rational] & history attests to its authenticity too ...[in conclusion] one may read & hear accounts of the Companions & ask 'Why do you glorify the Companions when they did such & such?' We respond that such a question would only be valid if we believed that the Companions are infallible like Prophets & Messengers whereas this is not true. A Companion may make a mistake & still remain a Companion [because of Iman].
