Marvel’s Villain Problem: Villain Problem Boogaloo?

The first appearance of Thanos, the Mad Titan and future wielder of the Infinity Gauntlet, was in a brief Avengers post-credits scene in 2012, but it wasn’t until 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War that the big purple guy really got going, and 2019’s Avengers: Endgame when he got what was coming to him. That’s a lot of buildup for a hell of a payoff. No wonder he’s held up as the current king and god emperor of MCU villains.

Now, of course you can set up a new antagonist in a single movie, rather than laying seeds over many films and years. But will that be the Disney-Marvel strategy going forward? Are they going to try Thanos 2.0? Will they introduce various major villains who will eventually team up? The Kevin Feige brain trust is tight-lipped at the moment, but what we do know is that the next few phases of the MCU are going to need a pretty barnstorming Big Bad to rob Thanos of his crown.

After all, what are superheroes without their antagonists? Captain America, Iron Man, Black Widow, Superman, Batman - if it weren’t for their Red Skulls, their Lex Luthors, their Jokers, they would just be people in strange outfits wandering around with nothing to do.

In this video, we’re going to look at the confirmations, the rumors and the wild hopes, and ask the question - who will be the MCU’s next major antagonist?
