Maggie O’Kane returns to Iraq five years after Desert Storm to try to understand why she was not able to report the war freely and to investigate some of the stories which simply didn’t stand up.

The Gulf War (2 August 1990 – 28 February 1991), codenamed Operation Desert Shield (2 August 1990 – 17 January 1991) for operations leading to the buildup of troops and defense of Saudi Arabia and Operation Desert Storm (17 January 1991 – 28 February 1991) in its combat phase, was a war waged by coalition forces from 35 nations led by the United States against Iraq in response to Iraq's invasion and annexation of Kuwait.

During the first Gulf War,a coalition of some 700,000 troops, led by the United Nations, intervened to liberate Kuwait from Iraqi occupation in the first half of 1991. But at what price? Indeed, to destroy Iraqi tanks, the USA and the UK uses depleted uranium to make ammunition and tank armor. Depleted uranium is a by-product of the uranium enrichment process. It is a low-level radioactive substance with the same chemical toxicity and radiological properties as natural uranium. The 1991 Persian Gulf War saw the use of some of the most frightening and devastating weapons of the twentieth century. Tons of depleted uranium were used during the conflict without fully considering its long-term impact on local communities. It contaminated impact areas with extremely fine radioactive and toxic dust. The use of radioactive and toxic waste in munitions has ushered in a new era in land warfare.
