Getting started with homeschool is overwhelming -- understatement of the century.
One of the first books I read about homeschooling was the Successful Homeschool Family Handbook by Dr. Raymond and Dorothy Moore.
I was groping for how to do homeschool because I thought I had to replicate school at home. I thought it would be so fun to get school desks and line all my kids up in their desks and stand up in front of them and teach them.
Boy, was I in for a rude awakening. Every time I introduced a curriculum to my kids, they balked at it! They would whine and complain. There was NO WAY they would sit still or even focus on anything.
So, I threw my hands up in the air and gave up. I let my kids run amuck and do whatever they wanted! I hid in the corner while my kids trashed the house with all their toys and puzzles.
UGH! How the heck am I supposed to get my kids to learn anything??
That's when I read, and learned, and discovered that I didn't need to do ANYTHING because kids are natural learners.
That's when I started getting down on my kids' level, playing games with them, and giving them space to discover learning for themselves.
My 9-year-old taught himself how to read when he was 5. My 7-year-old is writing his own stories based on his favorite books, shows, and games. My 11-year-old is taking on the challenge of making bread all by herself. They love it, and I don't even have to pressure them.
Relax and trust your kids to fall in love with learning when they have the autonomy and joy to learn.
