Short Film: A Good Man Is Hard To Be

An ordinary family faces a life-threatening situation when a group of escaped convicts steps into their family restaurant.

In an almost supernatural setting, Sammy and his humble family maintain their modest diner in
the middle of nowhere. In this mysterious and disturbing site, both Sammy and his wife discuss
shocking and gruesome news they find on the paper. In midst of the moral debate, they
find themselves in an unusual yet mysterious fight of words for what’s the right thing to do in
one of the worst situations one can be in. Full of optimism, Sammy tries to engage in his simple
but hearty job serving at the diner when a group of escaped convicts enter the family
restaurant. What should they do?

Sammy fights his inner gut about what’s the best thing to do against his true will and morals. In
the middle of the dilemma, his family must act under pressure and define what’s good and what’s
bad. As Sammy told his little boy: “always do what’s right”. In the middle of his innocence, he
warns a couple that enters the diner with a condemning scream to run away. Virtue and purity
were their unintentional last sentence.

In the 10-minute short film “A Good Man Is Hard to Be”, the shocking performances and
outstanding Southern Gothic cinematography and edition, hand-caries the audience to make
them feel immersed in a unique sense western alike, full of tension and promises while the
good man paradox will be put to a strong test. Both the music and sound editing create the
bitterest of atmospheres that invade the viewer’s mind and senses. For what’s left, the best
man one can be, cannot kill himself and will now have to live an insufferable regret and grief he
never deserved. The endless burden every good man will carry.

DIRECTOR STATEMENT
Many things are easier said than done, and in the face of death, a person’s words may not hold much meaning at all. A GOOD MAN IS HARD TO BE explores this through a simple family living in the 1960s. Taking inspiration from Flannery O’Connor’s classic short story, “A Good Man Is Hard To Find”, this film has a unique opportunity in presenting itself as a suspenseful thriller under the Southern Gothic style, something not seen often today.

Sammy is a good man by all accounts on the surface, but his simple way of living is disrupted when the Misfit arrives, bringing a dark and twisted view of the world with him. Pushed to the edge, Sammy and his family all act and react differently to the threat in ways that one would not expect. Through that, the film aims to tell a tense story of how a person’s actions hold more value in determining their character than words do.
