As part of modernizing its fleet, Amtrak began taking delivery of new Siemens SC-44 Charger locomotives in 2017 and ALC-42 Charger locomotives in 2022. These engines were intended to replace the aging GE Genesis P42DC locomotives on regional and long-distance trains respectively. Not long after these new engines entered service, Amtrak began noting reliability issues with them particularly in the wintertime.

My most recent trip aboard Amtrak back in February showed me first-hand how Amtrak dealt with one instance of Siemens Charger issues. For a brief period in February, the state-supported "Illini" and "Saluki" trains between Chicago and Carbondale were hauled by P42DC engines for the first time in over five years because the SC-44s were having issues. Not wanting to miss this rare opportunity, I decided to document this trip for you all.

Today's journey is from Chicago to Champaign on the recently-reinstated morning southbound run, Amtrak "Saluki" 391. The coach we were in happened to be one of the refreshed Superliner cars with new seat covers which was an added bonus!
