Ghana-based artist Ibrahim Mahama discusses "NON ORIENTABLE PARADISE LOST 1667," 2017, a monumental sculpture inspired by the wooden boxes of Ghanaian “shoeshine boys.” Drawn to the patina of these objects and the ways their surfaces possess history and tell stories, Mahama uses these materials to recall the presence of the individual laborer within complex systems of trade, and the global disparities in income and resources.

"NON ORIENTABLE PARADISE LOST 1667," is on view at the ICA Watershed in East Boston from May 26, 2022 to September 5, 2022 as part of "Revival: Materials and Monumental Forms."
