VN24 - 04-09-2023 (D/M/Y) - Herdecke / Germany - During roofing work in Veilchenstraße, some rolls of roofing felt were to be lifted onto the roof of an apartment building. The lightweight crane used for this purpose, with an aluminum jib up to 34 meters long on a 7.5 ton truck chassis, was ideally suited for this work. The load was barely more than 250kg. Unfortunately, at around 1:50 p.m., one of the crane's supports apparently slipped off its base plate and dug into the ground. The crane tilted and laid down with the boom on the roof parapet, which served as a fall protection for the workers. As a result, the crane set the load on the hook down somewhat roughly on the roof, but no damage was caused. No persons were injured either.
The Herdecke volunteer fire department arrived with a complete firefighting group and several fire engines, the Witten fire department came with its complete salvage group, and there were also numerous executives and the chief of the fire department on site. Finally, the Dortmund fire department arrived with a recovery team and the fire department's own 70-ton mobile crane (Liebherr LTM 1070 4.2). This was set up to secure the damaged crane and to gently lower the undercarriage during the recovery operation and bring it back onto its wheels. Firefighters labored for over five and a half hours to get their equipment in place and recover the crane. The crashed crane will likely be able to return to service after a thorough investigation.
