Project Summary

This report documents the key activities, findings, and recommendations of the Blockchain Demonstration Project sponsored by the Colombian Chambers of Barranquilla, Cali, and Medellin (“The Chambers”). The Chambers formed a consortium to explore how blockchain technologies can contribute to break-through solutions for delivering digital services and uncover new value-adding business services to customers which together will contribute to the economic growth of Colombia.

The Chambers, including those that participated in the project, are responsible for maintaining a registry of all businesses in their jurisdiction. In addition, to a range of business registration services, the Chambers provide consulting, training, and other solutions aimed at strengthening commercial activities across Colombia.

ChromaWay is a leading blockchain software provider that allows enterprises and consortiums to build distributed business solutions on top of its platform. ChromaWay’s work with multiple registries in North America, Europe and Asia enabled the Chambers to benefit from lessons learned from past projects. ChromaWay provides, open-source blockchain technology including Postchain, a consortium database that utilizes blockchain protocols to synchronize data across multiple organizations and Esplix, a smart contract/secure workflow application. Postchain and Esplix are primarily oriented towards permissioned networks. In addition, ChromaWay is deploying a public platform, Chromapolis, which built on Postchain, a blockchain rooted in relational database technology.

The objectives of Phase I of the project were to enable Chamber representatives to:

Understand blockchain business and technical concepts
Explore use cases and applications of blockchain relevant to the Chambers
Gain hands-on experience working with blockchain technology
Develop and evaluate a blockchain prototype targeting core business registration
Identify additional “disruptive” blockchain-based solutions that would benefit the Chambers and Colombian businesses
Leverage a final report summarizing the project findings and recommendations for use as a roadmap for next steps
