Mastering The Authority Influence Principle For Maximum Persuasion Success
The Influence Principle of Authority to Win More Persuasion Situations!
0:19
The Influence Principle of Authority is defined as follows: people rely on those with superior knowledge, experience, and expertise for unbiased guidance on how to act and behave. We look for and then defer to authority figures when we are uncertain.

This study focused on jaywalking, which involves people crossing the street
when the traffic light is red. Here's what they did: for several weeks, the same
individual alternated between wearing jeans and a t-shirt and wearing a suit.
In both instances, this person began jaywalking, and researchers observed
how many people followed suit.

The results were fascinating. When the person was dressed in a suit, 350%
more people followed him. Now, you might be wondering if he was dressed as
a superhero, but no, that wasn't the case. So, what's the explanation? It's the
suit. These superficial cues we pick up on make us more receptive to
information from that person and more likely to follow their lead. In essence,
we tend to make judgments based on these surface-level clues, which activate
the principle of authority.

So, there's a saying, "dress for success," and it's rooted in the principle of
authority. It's absolutely true. Now, let's define authority. We rely on
individuals with superior knowledge or wisdom because we often lack the
time or willingness to acquire that knowledge ourselves. Therefore, we place
our trust in experts.

Even if he was a high powered business executive, he’s got no more knowledge of when it’s time to cross the street than anyone else, the followers were simply reacting, not rationally thinking!
