Welzie Shares his most important tips to know before going to do your first art festival, art fair of art market. With over 10 years doing art festivals Welzie has a lot of knowledge of how to make the most of your first Art Festival.

Welzie is a Maui art and the Artist in Residence at the Andaz Resort Wailea Maui. Specializing in surfboard foam, fiberglass and resin, Welzie creates fun and whimsical art inspired by the Hawaiian Islands. Welzie creates his artwork in his South Maui Art Studio and his Maui art gallery is located on the 5th floor of the Andaz Resort Wailea, Maui. Welzie has art collectors from all over the worlds and has had hi work shown in art galleries throughout Hawaii, as well as the US mainland and Japan.

Welzie enjoys the art coaching and art tips for beginning artist because he knows what its like to be an artists trying to make it in the art world. ART FESTIVAL TIPS
1. Know the rules of the festival
a. Set up take down times
b. Tents
c. Table cloths mandatory
d. Is there booth requirements

2. Don’t over do it.
a. Simple can be better
b. Don’t spend more time on booth than you do making art
c. Art on display. Originals on the wall, prints on the table
d. Have your art name clearly displayed
e. Don’t spend a fortune on your booth
f. When you start making good money you can start expanding your booth

3. Have lots of art
a. Original
b. Prints
c. Make sure pieces are finished and ready to sell
d. Focus more on artwork than merchandise

4. Know your price points and what the fair can produce
a. Print prices
b. Original prices
c. Don’t overprice artwork for the festival
d. Better to sell out than nothing at all

5. Know your math
a. How many people at the festival
b. How much in inventory do you have
c. What is your goal amount
d. How much did you spend on booth, time, food etc
e.

6. Make yourself comfortable
a. Snacks, water etc
b. Chairs
c. What are you going to do for the bathroom
d. Go when its slow
e. Get a friend to help you if you can

7. Sales
a. Have your card reader ready
b. If no card reader your top price is 300$ for atm withdrawal
c. Have your prices ready off your head and have prices displayed
d. Have change ready
e. Start getting an email list together


8. Learn
a. Look at other artists are doing right and wrong
b. Be working on your spell the whole time
c. Have your answers ready - I sued to make a list of all the questions I would be asked
d. Take notes of ideas or things you need for next time while you are there
e. That night or next day write out everything that went on, names of clients sales etc

9. Time
a. Make sure you have enough time to set up - complicated set ups take lots of time
b. Don’t spend to much time with 1 person. Its ok to say you need to help another person
c. You can make changes to your display during the festival. Get you booth basically set up then spend the time dialing it in
d. Murphys Law: Make sure you have time for all the variables that can come into play

10. Have fun!
a. Art festivals are great to connect with fans and other artists
b. You will see the artists year after year so introduce yourself
c. I always enjoyed bringing a few beers and sharing with the artists after the show
d. Make friends with your neighbors, they can watch your booth while you go Shishi
e. If you have a lot of anxiety about it know that all artists do, but you will be so happy you did it.
f. Low expectations = high rewards
