We ride the all-new 2021 Harley-Davidson Sportster S! The Sportster takes a major step forward with the 2021 S model, which utilizes a completely modern design ethos, from the engine, chassis, electronics package, and much more.

Powering the Sportster is the water-cooled 60-degree V-twin Revolution Max 1250T engine derived from H-D's latest Pan America ADV platform. Several crucial changes make it suitable for cruiser life, all of which prioritize healthy low-end torque delivered anywhere, anytime. To that end, engineers updated the camshafts, cylinder heads, pistons, velocity stacks, and airbox, as well as the fuel and Variable Valve Timing maps. The end result is a supremely smooth, massively powerful V-twin powerplant that is more than ready to leap off the line.

A slick six-speed gearbox rounds out the niceties of this great engine, and the only downside is that the rider's thigh is near the rear cylinder head, and when at low speeds or when idling at a stop, you will feel some radiant heat.

Another huge change for this modern Sportster is its stressed-member chassis design, which utilizes the 1250T engine as a structural element for the frame. Much like modern sportbike design, a front, mid, and rear frame are bolted directly to the engine, saving weight and improving handling characteristics by a huge margin. This new performance cruiser handles incredibly well, allowing riders to take full advantage of its ample 34-degree maximum lean angle.

According to Harley-Davidson staff, the rider triangle is nearly identical to that of the Sportster Forty-Eight, which also features a low seat height and forward controls. After long periods of time in the saddle, the riding position can become taxing. However, a $660 mid-control option is available and helps to a noticeable degree.

Also included in this modern Sportster is a full suite of electronics. Five ride modes, cornering ABS, lean-angle-sensitive traction control, wheelie control, and cruise control, are all standard. The preset riding modes include Rain, Road, and Sport, which all dramatically change the behavior of the Sportster S.

The performance-oriented 2021 Harley-Davidson Sporster S now stands as the premier Sportster in the current lineup, and we expect many more exciting iterations, as well as additions to the historic Sportster family in the future.

Senior Editor Nic de Sena took to the streets of Los Angeles and some curvy canyons nearby and shared his thoughts just after hopping off the new Sporty.
