Tesla’s Next Gen 4680 Battery Cell Technology
The 4680 is a powerful battery that Tesla is producing with Panasonic, and it will soon be ready to go into mass production. What was once just a theory is now the pride and joy of Tesla battery technology.
In September of 2020, Elon Musk made a fantastic announcement about how Tesla had made a remarkable breakthrough in battery technology. It was a tabless lithium-ion battery cell called the 4680. It heralded an extremely significant milestone in the company’s quest to find ways to reduce the cost of their electric cars. With the 4680, it’s now possible to reduce the price of their electric cars to as little as $25,000. The battery is proving to be more efficient in terms of both power and capacity. Today, let’s check out Tesla’s next-gen 4680 battery cell technology.

How the 4680 compares against regular batteries
What stands out the most about the 4680 is its size. A single 4680 battery is five times larger than the regular 1865 or 2170 batteries that were first considered for Tesla’s electric vehicles. The dimensions of a single battery unit is 46mm wide by 80 mm tall. While it may not sound that big, just think of all the power that’s packed into it. Even though it’s five times larger than the other batteries in its class, the size of the 4680 means that the thousands of battery cells found in an electric vehicle can be reduced to a smaller number. For example, the Model 3 and the Model Y are currently using the 2170 battery, which uses between 4,000 and 8000 cells. The 4680 will reduce the number of individual cells to 500 while holding the same amount of energy if not more due to the improved total energy capacity and general advancements in battery chemistry. This works out to a lot of savings that will further reduce the price of the vehicle for consumers.

Production will be assisted by project roadrunner
Tesla is currently working on the Roadrunner project, which is an all-new pilot battery production line in Fremont to help the company achieve its 10 gigawatt target. With Roadrunner in action, not only will Tesla be producing the most advanced electric vehicle battery in the world, it will also own the largest battery production line in the world. The company is already ramping up manufacturing of the 4680 cells and will ultimately aim for production on a terawatt scale. The plan is for the company to produce 10 GWh of batteries in 2021, 100 GWh around 2022, and 3,000 GWh (3 TWh) by 2030. It’s an ambitious plan, but with a man like Elon Musk at the helm of affairs, it should be doable.
