Toyota GR Supra Manual First Drive: Total Transformation?

Hello guys, welcome back to Car Obsession, and welcome to another first drive video. Some of you may remember that last year I drove the Toyota GR Supra and I was a bit underwhelmed by it.

You join me with another GR Supra, only this time....it's manual. Yes, that's right, the people spoke and Toyota listened. The same 3.0 litre twin turbo straight six is under the bonnet, producing 340hp and 500Nm of torque. Power is still sent to the rear wheels of course, only this time it's via the 6-speed manual that has been built specifically for the Toyota GR Supra.

0-62 is a little slower - 4.6 compared to the auto's 4.3 - but it's far from a slouch. Thanks to the loss of the auto the Toyota GR Supra Manual is over 38kg lighter as well, which will improve handling.

It’s not just the transmission that has achieved the 38.5kg loss of weight - the 19” lightweight forged alloys also play their part as well. The final drive ratio has also been tweaked compared to the auto to sluggish take-off.

The manual Supra also benefits from changes to the entire Supra range including re-tuned shock absorbers, stiffer anti-roll bar bushes and the power steering has been improved as well.

For the manual, Toyota opted for a heavier gearknob to give a better feel when changing and the centre console has been revised to allow for the room required when shifting through the gears - there’s a precise 42mm clearance between the shift knob and the air con panel.

The traction control has also seen changes to work better with the manual setup to allow for the different characteristic of the transmission. There is also a new Hairpin+ function. Toyota states it allows more freewheel spin on tight bends on an uphill gradient more than 5%. Put simply, this should make the car more rewarding on scene twisty roads - perfect for those European road trips.
