In 1929, ten years before he instituted the tradition of January 1 in the golden hall of the Musikverein, Clemens Krauss began conducting the Wiener Philharmoniker at the Salzburg Festival in a program entirely devoted to the Strauss family. He is an absolute model in the way he conducts the waltz, never metronomic (sewing machine), a three-beat that is always supple, with a human breath and that purrs like a kitten.
