The film opens with Alexander Hartdegen, a brilliant but somewhat distracted professor at Columbia University in 1899. Driven by personal tragedy after his fiancée Emma is murdered, Alexander becomes obsessed with the idea of changing the past. He dedicates four years to building a time machine, hoping to save Emma.

When his attempt to alter the past fails, Alexander, fueled by despair and curiosity, travels to the future. He first stops in 2030, witnessing advancements in technology. Further compelled, he pushes on to 802,701 A.D., where he finds Earth radically transformed. The human race has evolved into two distinct species: the Eloi, peaceful surface-dwellers, and the Morlocks, fearsome creatures lurking underground.

Alexander befriends Mara, an Eloi woman, and learns about the grim reality of this future world. The Morlocks, who prey on the Eloi, capture Mara, spurring Alexander into action.
