The films of Hayao Miyazaki wouldn’t be the same without the music of his friend and long-time collaborator Joe Hisaishi. The composer is synonymous with Ghibli, having created the studio’s most memorable scores, but he sometimes doesn’t get the recognition that he deserves. I took a deep dive into Hisaishi’s life and career, from his childhood and teenage years to his breakthrough in Japan and belated fame in the West.
