With Apple CarPlay and Android Auto now included on all but the base trim, the 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander combines valuable and popular infotainment technology with a compelling array of safety features. But despite a 2016 update, the latest model still struggles to compete alongside competitors from larger brands, like the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4. That said, George Kennedy did note that neither those rivals can offer three rows of seating—which the Outlander does with a competitive price tag, to boot.

One of the Outlander’s most pressing needs can be found under the hood. The 2.4-liter inline 4-cylinder engine found on nearly every trim delivers a modest 166 horsepower, regardless of whether you order your car with front-wheel drive or one of Mitsubishi’s all-wheel-drive systems: All-Wheel Control (AWC) and Super All-Wheel Control (S-AWC). The Outlander GT is graced with a more powerful 3.0-liter V6, good for 224 horsepower, but even this engine struggles to compete with more powerful (and efficient) competition.

The benefit of an Outlander, however, comes down to price. Starting at $23,945, there aren’t many options in its price range that can seat 7 passengers. And if an automaker needs to devote scarce resources to a product, safety and infotainment are good places to start.
