Todd Goodwin shares a story of a client who couldn't sleep due to severe trauma that resulted from finding her husband after he committed suicide. This led to years of self-medication with alcohol, cocaine, cigarettes, and Ambien. Despite functioning well as an executive, she struggled with flashbacks, guilt, grief, and emotional turmoil, common symptoms of PTSD. Conventional methods like medication and talk therapy provided some relief but didn't address the root cause - her traumatic memories.
As a board certified hypnotist, Todd employed Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), hypnosis, and memory reconsolidation techniques to remove the emotional charge from her traumatic memory. She still knew exactly what happened and how, but the thought and memory no longer bothered her. As a result, she stopped needing medication to sleep and gradually ceased her substance use with her doctor's help. Todd emphasizes the importance of addressing trauma first, as trying to quit addictive behaviors without dealing with the underlying trauma would likely have failed. As he says, “If you didn’t feel so low, you wouldn’t have to get so high.” He explains that changing disempowering beliefs and traumatic memories can relieve toxic emotions, reducing the appeal of addictive behaviors and substances.
