Serious vision loss affects millions of Americans each year and biological strategies to correct things like retinal degeneration are still decades off. But University of Oregon researchers are looking to create an electronic solution — a bionic eye — that could restore people’s sight. The biggest challenge is creating an interface that will allow the brain to understand what the bionic eye is seeing. They’re tapping into the world of fractal structures that will allow the retinal implant and brain to communicate with each other.
