I have lived by Wolf Mansion since 1976 and have been inside the mansion dozens of times. As a kid we played in Summer Olympics and Civil War reenactments where cannons blasted and shook the ground. I spent time in the various stores that were inside the mansion in mid eighties. As a teen I went inside the then abandoned Mansion when mad at mom and I would sleep there overnight. I even found secret maid passage stairway from maid quarters to kitchen pantry. I watched the movie Blood Bath in Psycho Town filmed therein 1989 and even had back adjustments from Dr. Neyhart in 2001. Needless to say I love this place and if I could afford it I would buy it.
Story of Wolf Mansion Owner and Creation
Josephus Wolf began building Wolf Mansion in 1872 and after employing 300 German bricklayers finished construction in 1875. Mansion is 7800 square feet and cost total of $6000.00 building cost. Mr. wolf owned 4700 acres around home which was referred to as Twenty Mile or McCool Village or Wolf Farm. Wolf supported his home by being the largest dairy farmer in the area with 374 heads of cattle.
Josephus Wolf died in his home from pneumonia cased by skin cancer on March 8th 1895
Susan Wolf his wife died in 1903 on 2nd floor bedroom.
Many have told stories and myths about it being haunted or that Mr. Wolf killed his family in a fit of rage and hung his youngest in cupola. These are false. Wolf Mansion is often confused for the Wolf murders in North Dakota where that Mr. Wolf went mad murdered his whole family and killed himself.
It has been said he killed all the slaves who built Wolf Mansion and that too is false. Slavery ended 1865 before house was even started. Also Indiana is stop on the Underground Railroad and slavery was not legal in Indiana either.
