US and Soviet soldiers came together on the destroyed Elbe bridge near Torgau on 25 April 1945 to symbolically seal the end of the Second World War. The American patrol, consisting of William Robertson, Frank Huff, James McDonnell and Paul Staub, met Lieutenant Alexander Silwaschko and his Soviet soldiers in Torgau at 3:30 pm.
The war photographer Alexander Ustinov reenacted the events with the original protagonists the next day, as the first meeting was not photographically documented. The end of the Second World War was already within reach shortly afterwards.
