About the Talk:
While Literature Festivals mostly showcase Books and Authors, more frequently than none they disregard Translations as a work of Literary piece. The session on Art of Translation at DU Lit. Fest.
sponsered by Sarayu Trust addressed many issues faced by the translators. Translations are a very significant part of Literary world to pass on stories to other languages from the original language in which they are presented.
Proficiency in a language, love for Literature and amalgamation of Cultures are key features for a good translation. Only through translations literature spreads far and wide.
About the Speakers:
Maneesha Taneja teaches Spanish in Delhi University and translates between Spanish, English and Hindi. Her noteworthy translations include Gabriel García Márquez’s One Hundred Years of Solitude, Pablo Neruda’s Memoirs into Hindi from Spanish and Nadine Gordimer’s collection of short stories, all three of them Nobel winners. Her recent translation of Amitav Ghosh’s Gun Island has received much critical acclaim.
Urmila Gupta has been editing and translating English to Hindi projects for more than a decade now. She has worked as a full time employee with Yatra Books and Rajkamal Prakashan and as a freelancer she has done projects for Penguin, Westland, Harper Collins, Vani Prakashan, Scholastic, Juggernaut, Tulika, Teamwork, StoryTel and Dainik Jagran etc. Urmila Gupta has a proven expertise in English to Hindi translations. Presently Urmila Gupta is working with HarperCollins Publishers, as an Hindi-Editor.
Ashutosh Garg is the author of the bestseller Hindi novel, Ashwatthama, Indra, Kalki and Kuber. He is proficient in both Hindi and English languages and has dictionaries, book for children to his credit and has translated over 30 bestselling books. He is a post-graduate in Hindi literature and regularly writes for magazines and newspapers.
Rachna Bhola Yamini is Author, freelance Editor and Translator, She is a post-graduate in journalism and contributes regularly to various magazines and newspapers. Writes on various genre – stories, biography, novel, etc. and has written over 150 books. With a command over both English and Hindi languages, she has translated a number of fairy tales, classics and children fiction books.
