Nissan sold only 8,000 Titans last year but hopes more trims, a burly new “tweener” XD version, and a new gas engine will boost interest in this year’s model. The new XD gets a tougher ladder chassis and larger capacities than the standard Titan, and new single cab versions of both the regular Titan and the XD are the first 3-passenger Titans ever offered. A new 5.6-liter V8 available to regular and XD Titans puts out 390 hp and 394 lb-ft of torque, and it will be paired with a 7-speed automatic transmission with adaptive shift control and downshift rev matching.

The 2017 Titan does not offer Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, and its touchscreen doesn’t look very up to date, but otherwise the infotainment system worked fine, and its 360-degree around-view camera system was helpful in a land of generally smaller parking spaces.
