Grand Canyon South Rim: What To Do With Limited Time

On my Grand Circle Roadtrip, I only had time to visit the Grand Canyon for one day. I made the most of my brief trip, exploring the viewpoints of Mather Point, Grand View Point, and the Desert View Watchtower. All provide different perspectives of the canyon. The Colorado River was visible at all of the viewpoints (sometimes best with binoculars or a telescope lens). However, the further east on the rim you drive, the easier (and closer) you get to the river. I think it is important to see the river to understand how amazing the Grand Canyon really is.

The Grand Canyon has been carved over millions of years by the Colorado River. The canyon's story begins with the uplifting of the Colorado Plateau, exposing sedimentary rock layers that date back as far as 1.7 billion years. The ever-flowing Colorado River, along with the forces of erosion, sculpted the canyon into the remarkable landscape we witness today.
