"Uncle" Joe McDonald was a house slave in Alabama. Here, he recounts how he was treated. From this recording, taken in 1940, it is clear he had respect for his owners and believed he was treated well. A typical day for McDonald was cleaning and washing and preparing the white children of the family for their day.

Keep in mind, McDonald was born into slavery and it was the only life he knew. For the McMillan's owning "colored" people was also normal. It was the way things were. But like the abortion issue today, some people are not able to let go of the old way of doing things, allowing humanity to move forward.

I am posting these narratives not so much to remind America that black people and other minorities were treated as subhuman, but to illustrate we, as a nation, have never reconciled with our past where a few people holding the believe that one race of people is better than others, have been allowed to highjack the mentality of a nation. Bringing us to this point in time.

Other than climate change, dealing with the racial tension that still exists in the USA will be our only path forward toward equality.

Let's start the conversation.
