In 1998, Lexus introduced an all-new model, the RX. It was both the brand’s first SUV and, it claimed, the first luxury SUV from any premium automaker. It was certainly a solid decision as the RX was an immediate hit, and it’s still the top-selling model that Lexus has made. When one rolled out of Toyota’s plant in Cambridge, Ontario in 2003, it was the first Lexus vehicle ever made outside of Japan, and the Canadian plant is where this 2024 Lexus RX 350 that I’m testing was made.

The RX comes with four propulsion picks, starting with my RX 350, which is gas-only. You can also get the RX 350h, which is a gas-electric hybrid; the RX 500h, also a hybrid but more powerful; and the new-for-2024 RX 450h plug-in hybrid (PHEV). That last one has a range of 60 kilometres on electricity after it’s been charged, but when that depletes, it continues on as a conventional gas-electric hybrid.

The non-electrified RX 350 starts at $59,850 and then offers six trim packages that can be added on.
