These Maze Runner Scenes Look So Different With The CGI Effects!

We’ve been having some serious nostalgia diving into the Maze Runner Trilogy films- and today we’re taking a look behind the scenes to see how all the complex CGI and video effects were brought to life!
The first film had a total of 530 CGI shots, the second- The Scorch Trials, stepped it up with a total of 579 CGI shots and the final - The Death Cure topped both films with a total of 678 shots. You can bet there is loads of interesting stuff behind the scenes.
Of course, the maze is a pretty major part of the film - so how did they create the vast scene and what did it actually look like for the actors on set? Aside from one small facade, pretty much the whole thing was computer generated, with great attention paid to details and nuances like shadows and vines! By the way - the vines were so complex, they actually created brand new software just for that one element! Aside from a couple large blue screens, some other indicators were just simple blue poles set up!
Then of course, there are the Grievers. Fortunately, there is nothing real about them as they were totally computer generated- but it doesn’t mean they don’t look super realistic. As for what simulated the motions and battles for the actors - we have stuntmen dressed in all blue with large blue poles and pads to thank for that! The helicopter scene in The Death Cure? All pretty amazing CGI - though there was some real fire involved! After seeing how much of these films was computer generated, you won’t be able to watch the movies the same way again!
