The respiratory system is responsible for the exchange of gases between air outside the body and blood inside the body. It begins at the nose and runs to the lungs as branching tubes ending in microscopic alveoli. The lungs are filled with air and emptied by movements of the walls of the thorax and the diaphragm translated onto the lungs by the pleural membranes. Let's have a visual look at this anatomy.
