In 2025, Mercedes-Benz will introduce a groundbreaking version of the iconic G-Class, reengineered as a fully electric vehicle. The new model, known as the G580 EQ, dispenses with traditional gasoline engines in favor of a quartet of electric motors, one per wheel, thus boosting its renowned off-road capabilities.

Externally, the electric G-Class maintains its classic aesthetic, but beneath this familiar facade lies a powerhouse of innovation. It harnesses 579 horsepower and 859 pound-feet of torque from its electric motors, surpassing the performance specs of its high-performance predecessor, the AMG G63, and offering immediate torque availability typical of electric vehicles.

The new G-Class electric accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 4.6 seconds and has a top speed limited to 112 mph. Beyond its on-road capabilities, the vehicle excels in off-road situations with a fording depth of 33.5 inches and the ability to climb lateral slopes up to 35 degrees. The design prioritizes off-road dynamics with 9.8 inches of axle clearance, along with steep approach, departure, and breakover angles that facilitate navigating rugged terrain.

Key features of this all-electric G-Class include a two-speed shiftable transmission for low-range gearing and a crawl mode designed for optimal control in tough terrains. It also introduces the "G-Turn," which allows the vehicle to turn in place, akin to a tank turn, enhancing its maneuverability. Virtual differential locks and torque vectoring ensure superior traction, while adaptive dampers and a specialized steering function reduce the turning circle dramatically.

The structure of the G580 EQ is robust, built around a protective ladder frame that houses a large 116.0-kilowatt-hour battery. This battery is secured with high-strength materials like carbon, optimizing the vehicle’s durability and range, which, while not yet specified, benefits from fast charging capabilities allowing significant recharge in just 32 minutes.

Aesthetically, the vehicle features a solid, illuminated grille and offers an optional storage unit replacing the rear spare tire, catering to practical needs without sacrificing style. The electric model retains the G-Class's traditional boxy shape but integrates subtle aerodynamic enhancements to improve efficiency.

Inside, the layout remains true to the G-Class heritage but is updated with modern technology. Features include two 12.3-inch screens and innovative "transparent hood" technology that uses a 360-degree camera to improve visibility by showing the ground beneath the vehicle's front end.

Set to debut as the Edition One in the U.S. market in 2025, the electric G-Class will be available in a range of exclusive colors with unique design elements like blue brake calipers and custom trim inserts. It also introduces a synthetic engine noise feature called "G-Roar" to mimic the sound of a combustion engine, blending traditional G-Class sensibilities with modern EV technology.

This model is expected to command a premium, reflecting its advanced features and capabilities. Further enhancing its appeal, Mercedes plans to upgrade its battery technology shortly after launch, promising to significantly increase the vehicle's range. The electric G-Class represents a fusion of luxury, tradition, and forward-thinking automotive design, positioning it as a pinnacle of contemporary electric vehicle technology.
