Strategic issues are topics or themes that arise at the beginning of any planning process. Oftentimes, they’re issues that stick out when assessing your current state. Themes you know you’ll have to solve, fix and decide on before you plan the year.

How to Structure Strategic Issues:
Structure them in the form of a question. We like to break it up into three sections:

1. How do we
2. Activity, process, challenge
3. Outcome

The strategic issue we use as an example, “diversifying our revenue,” is listed as the outcome. The point of this exercise is to figure out how to do that. Structuring the issue in the form of a question forces you to answer it during your organization’s planning process.

Don’t overwhelm yourself with tons of strategic issues. Identify half a dozen or less.

How to Use Strategic Issues

1. Answer the questions you’ve structured before setting objectives for the year
2. Perform a deep dive on the issues you’ve identified
3. As a parking lot - “park” the issues you prefer to tackle in the future
4. To circle back to for answers

Structuring and using strategic issues helps to move the planning process forward and crafts a plan that includes everything you need to address. Leverage strategic issues for your organization to level up your planning process.
