In this video, we’re going to talk about IGF-1 (insulin-like growth factor) in simple terms.

Insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) is an extension of growth hormone. When the pituitary gland in the brain makes growth hormone, it’s sent to the liver, which then triggers the production of IGF-1.

Whatever growth hormone does, IGF-1 also does.

The chemistry of IGF-1 is similar to that of insulin. IGF-1 and insulin work together to determine what type of fuel your body will use.

When you eat (especially carb-rich foods), your body will use glucose (sugar) as fuel. When you aren’t eating, your body will use fat as fuel. IGF-1 works when you’re not eating, and insulin works when you are eating. IGF-1 is 100x more powerful than insulin.

The causes of low IGF-1 include:
• High insulin
• Chronic stress
• High estrogen

IGF-1 is triggered by:
• Moderate protein (3-6 oz)
• Exercise
• Fasting
• High-quality sleep
