Tech giant Apple’s vendors have hired 20,000 new employees ever since the central government’s Rs 40,000 crores production-linked incentive (PLI) for smartphones became operational in August 2020.

The company’s two major contract manufacturers, i.e. Foxconn and Wistron, have already met and surpassed the year one (FY21) investment target of Rs 250 crore each and also recruited 7,500 new workers each in the last 10 months.

Moreover, other Apple vendors such as Salcomp, Sunwoda and Foxlink are also believed to have employed another 5,000 individuals in order to augment the manufacturing capacity of the two aforementioned contractors.

Pegatron is another contract manufacturer of Apple that has been picked under the PLI scheme. The firm is set to appoint an additional 6000-7000 employees in the present fiscal year once it kicks off its operations in the country.

Each of these companies are anticipated to employ 23,000 workers as per their PLI applications by the end of FY22.

The government had forecast that the smartphone PLI scheme will generate two lakh new direct employment opportunities in the country in the coming five years. Furthermore, it is also slated to give rise to around six lakh indirect employment chances in the given time-frame.

The hiring process of Apple’s manufacturers is further expected to expedite as the Covid-19 vaccination program in the country gathers pace in the next few months.
