They may be separated in time by twenty years, but the Toyota GR Yaris hot hatch and Mitsubishi Lancer Evo VI Tommi Makinen Edition have much in common. For starters, they’re both out-and-out sports cars for the road that are based on the principles of rally driving.

However, while the TME followed years of success for Mitsubishi’s Evo VI in World Rally, the new Toyota GR Yaris is a rally car with no series to race in … yet. The vicissitudes of COVID-19 mean its rallying potential is yet to be fully realised, while the storied legend of the Evo is very well known.
