So what does exactly wiping the hard drive mean? We can distinguish the three most common data loss scenarios that can lead to an accidentally wiped hard drive.

1. You manually deleted all files from your hard drive.
While this is somewhat rare, there's definitely the best chance of recovery here and there's really not a whole lot to worry about in a case like that.

2. Accidental formatting.
And this usually arises from rushing through a process. You'd think you format an SD card when in reality you format your hard drive with a thousand baby photos on it. However, even still the chances of recovery in a case like this are high, but it is predicated upon a quick format being performed. If a full format was initiated on the drive, the chances of recovery go down drastically.

3. Formatting using 3rd party tools.
And with this, there's a lot of ambiguity because it will depend upon the software and the technicality of it all, making wiped hard drive recovery either highly probable or almost impossible. So that one is a little bit up to interpretation as well.

However, regardless of what happened to your files or how you managed to wipe your hard drive, I'm gonna be giving you the best chance of file recovery today by using one of the best pieces of file recovery software in the industry. And this software is Disk Drill. It delivers real raw power in a simple and easy-to-use package. This tool is available for both Mac and Windows PC. It allows you to recover data from accidentally erased external and internal hard drive disks. Supports FAT16/FAT32/exFAT, NTFS, HFS, HFS+, APFS, EXT2/EXT3/EXT4 file systems aswell as RAW drives.

📌 To recover an erased hard drive:
1. Download and install Disk Drill.
2. Select the drive or partition that was erased or wiped.
3. Click the Search for lost data button to initiate scanning.
4. Once the scan is finished, select the files (photos, music files, videos, documents, etc.) you wish to restore and click Recover.
5. Choose a recovery location. Make sure that your recovery location is not your wiped drive or partition.
6. Click next to recover data from an erased hard drive.
