The luteal phase is considered defective or deficient if the progesterone level is not sufficient to maintain the uterine lining or endometrium for embryo implantation and pregnancy. A short luteal phase of fewer than 8 days can only cause infertility if it is consistently present in most months. Luteal phase deficiency is a subtle form of ovulation defect.
