Scanning staircases is a little different than capturing a typical room with Canvas. It can be challenging to use the standard fence painting method since you can’t get far enough from the wall.

However, Scanning staircases is a little different than capturing a typical room with Canvas. It can be challenging to use the standard fence painting method since you can’t get far enough from the wall.

Start at the bottom of the staircase. Not only is it safer than starting at the top, but the LiDAR sensor will have a better view of the tread and risers. Start by scanning where the steps meet the floor, about two feet away from the bottom step.

As you slowly walk up the stairs, move your device in a U-shaped motion, sweeping from side to side, making sure to capture the stairs themselves.
If you’re using our Scan To CAD service, it's not necessary to capture every square inch of the walls. Don't worry, you won't have holes in your CAD file!
Be sure that you’ve scanned the width of the steps, where the walls meet the ceiling and any other details you care about, like railing heights and ceiling heights.

Once you’ve reached the top of the stairs, ensure that you’ve clearly scanned the landing, because this is the main connection point between floors.

Hopefully, this helps take your scanning to another level. If you have any questions, please reach out to [email protected].
