"We prepared ourselves, and we went out like the other people. We reached the check point, the Jews called out and said: 'The women can cross with the children, they are safe, and the men and young men should return.' The youth did not give women room to cross, so two tanks came and started shooting at them, and a child was wounded, and then the plane came and opened fire and threw gas bombs at us, and people started to run away. People were afraid and could not take the risk and enter a dangerous area."

STORYLINE:
Hundreds of Palestinian families sheltering in central Gaza on Sunday challenged the Israeli military and began a perilous return trip to the isolated northern part of the war-torn strip.

The move comes despite the Israeli military renewed its warning on Sunday morning against the return of displaced people to their homes in northern Gaza, saying that the area remains a war zone.

Associated Press journalists saw dozens of displaced families heading north along the coastal Rashid road, one of the two main thoroughfares linking southern Gaza to its north.

The majority were on their feet, while others took donkey carts.

Later many were seen turning back south after reporting they were prevented from reaching the north by the Israeli army.

Northern Gaza, including Gaza City, was the first target of Israel's invasion of the strip after Hamas’s attack on southern Israel on Oct. 7.

The Israeli military has sealed off the northern half of the strip, and forced hundreds of thousands of Palestinians to leave their homes in the north and head to Gaza’s southern parts.
