Text from the Gospel & Homily ~ March 17, 2024

The Lord be with you. And with your spirit.

A proclamation of the holy gospel according to St. John. Glory to you, o Lord.

Some Greeks who had come to worship at the Passover feast came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and asked him, "Sir, we would like to see Jesus." Philip went and told Andrew; then Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus. Jesus answered them, "The hour has come for the son of mad to be glorified. Amen, amen, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains just a grain of wheat; but if it dies, it produces much fruit. Whoever loves his life loses it, and whoever hates his life in this world will preserve it for eternal life. Whoever serves me must follow me, and where I am, there also will my servant be. The father will honor whoever serves me. "I am troubled now. Yet what should I say? 'Father save me from this hour'? But it was for this purpose that I came to this hour. Father glorify your name." Then a voice came from heaven, "I have glorified it and will glorify it again." The crowd there heard it and said it was thunder; but others said, "An angel has spoken to him." Jesus answered and said, "This voice did not come for my sake but for yours. Now is the time of judgment on this world; now the ruler of this world will be driven out. And when I am lifted up from the earth, I will draw everyone to myself." He said this indicating the kind of death he would die.

The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ.

The readings for this week lead us up to the passion and death of Jesus. They help to prepare us for that which is to come and is going to come soon. It's hard to believe that this Lenten season is going to be coming to an end next week. We will be getting into those final days and the question I have is, what did you decide to do for Lent? Were you able to stick to what you decided for the entire season? Are sacrifices too much for you? All of these are very real questions. Beginning next Sunday, we will enter into the mysteries of Holy Week. We will walk closely with the Lord during those days of sadness and agony. But we have to prepare for the journey. In the letter to the Hebrews, we hear that Jesus suffered and prayed with tears and because of this was able to identify with us as we go through our daily lives. The cross was before him. And it is ever before us. We must work to make the difficulties of our lives the crosses that we must bear. And we have to make them more bearable for those who have true difficulties. Often times we say that we have difficulties but they're not really difficulties. They're just hard things that we just don't want to do. But there are real difficulties in our world. Today. The evil one is always looking for inroads. It's amazing. Why? Because of our neglect for one another. We have to work to loosen that grip and thus accompany Jesus on this journey. Amen.
