After the Kzinti Wars ended, the newly-chartered United Earth Starfleet Command commissioned the construction of a fleet of warships to protect the Solar System's borders.

All Poseidon-class destroyers were upgraded with faster engines and stronger weapons along with the rest of the fleet during Operation Deploy in 2153. The ships proved themselves in combat against the Romulans at the Battle of Andoria and again at the Battle of Cheron.

The Poseidon’s unique configuration would inspire the design of the Miranda-class starships that were constructed for the Federation Starfleet decades later.
