Though the science has progressed significantly since the arrival of HIV, 1.3 million new infections were recorded in 2022, while 630,000 died of AIDS-related illness. Though existing therapies can control viral load, a cure is still essential to improving outcomes for the many people living with HIV.

But in order to take us from the basic research involved in finding a target for a cure, to building the strategies that will be needed to completely eradicate the virus from the body, and ensuring any strategy is designed to work for the community it serves, we need a combined and comprehensive effort on all these fronts. This is the work of the BEAT-HIV Delaney Collaboratory.

From its base at The Wistar Insitute in Philadelphia, BEAT-HIV brings together research from across the world, to provide support to the work needed to find a cure. From identifying where the virus persists in CD4 cells, to establishing CAR-T cell therapy strategies, to social science research to ensure the work done is ethical, and will impact more marginalized communities, BEAT-HIV is driving researchers and the wider community towards a cure, and building the social infrastructure, resources and talent to make it happen.
