Welcome to The Binge Eating Therapist, where I, Sarah, share insights on your relationship with food. Today, let's dive into a common struggle—resistance. As we embark on changing well-established patterns, especially those intertwined with our eating habits and body image, resistance tends to rear its head.

Resistance, simply put, is the clash between opposing forces within us. However, what makes it complex is that both sides of this struggle are inherently us—two aspects of our psyche vying for dominance. Imagine the internal tug-of-war between the part of you that craves routine and control and the part that yearns for freedom and flexibility.

Here's the catch: both forces—control and freedom—are integral parts of you. The challenge is finding a harmonious middle ground where these opposing elements coexist. This balance is vital, just like reconciling the routine-loving side with the part that craves spontaneity.

Delving into neuroscience, we uncover three distinct brain regions: the thinking, emotional, and primal brains. While our cognitive mind may desire control, our primal brain might perceive it as restriction, creating an internal conflict. To harmonize these aspects, we must address our biological needs, fostering emotional safety, and deciphering our thoughts.

Creating safety in the primal and emotional brain involves meeting basic biological needs and regulating the nervous system. If safety is elusive, binging might become a coping mechanism, providing a fleeting escape. Thus, discovering alternative ways to feel calm and secure becomes crucial.

Resistance can be an ally, signaling incongruities between external advice and our inner truths. Rather than combatting it, we benefit from embracing resistance, understanding its nuances, and seeking clarity amid the conflict. My aim here is not to dictate solutions but to offer perspectives, encouraging you to explore and decide what resonates with you.

In the midst of this internal struggle, cultivating self-awareness through practices like meditation or journaling can help. The goal is not to suppress resistance but to navigate it with compassion, fostering a clearer understanding of our thoughts and beliefs.

Remember, the transformational power lies in self-realization. Instead of seeking directives from external sources, allow yourself the space to reflect, question, and find your own path. Resistance, when approached with understanding, becomes a catalyst for profound personal insights.
